The BSRLM Executive is delighted to announce that the latest Janet Duffin Award has been made to Nancy Barclay for her paper:
Barclay, N. (2021). Valid and valuable: lower attaining pupils’ contributions to mixed attainment mathematics in primary schools. Research in Mathematics Education, 23(2), 208-225. https://doi.org/10.1080/14794802.2021.1897035
The Janet Duffin Award is presented annually for the most outstanding contribution to the Research in Mathematics Education journal. The award for Volume 23 was decided by a poll of BSRLM members, based on a shortlist compiled by the journal Editors and Advisory Editors. The award will be presented at a future BSRLM day conference where Nancy will give a plenary lecture.
Two further papers were highly commended:
Erickson, A., Herbst, P., Ko, I., & Dimmel, J. (2021). When what routinely happens conflicts with what ought to be done: a scenario-based assessment of secondary mathematics teachers’ decisions. Research in Mathematics Education, 23(2), 188-207. https://doi.org/10.1080/14794802.2020.1855600
Marks, R., Foster, C., Barclay, N., Barnes, A., & Treacy, P. (2021). A comparative synthesis of UK mathematics education research: what are we talking about and do we align with international discourse? Research in Mathematics Education, 23(1), 39-62. https://doi.org/10.1080/14794802.2020.1725612
The Janet Duffin Award is made thanks to a generous gift made to the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM) by Bill Duffin, in memory of his wife Janet, a longstanding and active member of the Society. The Fund covers the costs of the Janet Duffin Award and Lecture.
