Applications are invited from members of the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM) to join the Editorial team of Research in Mathematics Education (RME) for a four year term commencing September 2025. The editorship is currently held jointly by Jenni Ingram, Christian Bokhove and Jodie Hunter, with three issues per year being published. Jenni Ingram’s term of office ends in September 2025. The three Editors work in close collaboration.
Research in Mathematics Education is the official journal of BSRLM. It is an international English language journal which publishes original refereed articles on all aspects of mathematics education. Journal submissions are welcome from both non-members and members of the organisation. The journal expects papers to frame the central issues in terms which are applicable across educational systems and informed by wider thinking in the field. The journal has three sections, covering research papers, book reviews, and day conference proceedings: a Book Reviews Editor and a Day Conference Proceedings Editor work alongside the main Editorial team.
The research papers section contains reports of studies involving empirical investigation and theoretical argument from which conclusions and implications can be drawn for future research and practice. Such reports are expected to show how the study builds on critical review of relevant literature and to provide an account of the methods used. Reports on thoughtful replications or variations of key earlier studies are welcome, as are reviews of some well-defined aspect of mathematics education. The journal welcomes high-quality research in any methodological tradition, is open to innovative and unusual approaches, and the editors are expected to be open to this diversity.
Editorial Board: An Editorial Board of BSRLM members, and an International Advisory Board of around 20 distinguished researchers, have been appointed by the BSRLM Executive. They participate in the reviewing process, and to contribute to the general promotion and development of the journal.
Applicants for the Editorship should set out their expertise and experience in relation to the role, and also indicate their views about how the journal could develop during the course of their tenure, in a 1 page application letter, alongside a 2 page CV.
Applications should be sent to Professor Alf Coles, Chair of BSRLM alf.coles@bris.ac.uk by 1st July 2025.
Informal enquiries about the role may be sent to any of the editors:
Jenni Ingram jenni.ingram@education.ox.ac.uk
Christian Bokhove c.bokhove@soton.ac.uk
Jodie Hunter J.Hunter1@massey.ac.nz
The BRSRLM Executive reserves the right to approach potential editors by invitation after the closing date for proposals.
