BSRLM Sustainability Statement

21st May 2025 by Karen Skilling

BSRLM has a small carbon footprint, having no permanent offices and working with volunteers. In other words, there are few scope 1 and 2 emissions. We take scope 3 emissions seriously and have taken steps to reduce these (see below).

We embed sustainability by:

  • only ordering vegetarian food for conferences (we have been doing this since the organisation began)
  • moving conference venues around the country to allow different people easier access and shorter journeys (again, a practice for many years)
  • holding one in three conferences online (since 2020)
  • holding one in three exec meetings online (since 2020)
  • moving RME to be delivered to members electronically (unless they specify otherwise) (from May 2025)
  • providing a venue (at conferences and in journal Research in Mathematics Education (RME)) for research into sustainability and mathematics education to be shared and discussed (evidence of which is e.g., a past conference working group on this issue and a RME special issue).
