We are pleased to announce the BSRLM Honorary Award has been presented to Ken Ruthven for outstanding service to mathematics education research in the UK and to BSRLM. The award was presented at the Society’s Spring Conference at UCL on 4th March 2023 where Ken gave an excellent plenary entitled “Teacher craft knowledge underpinning the integration of digital tools into school mathematics teaching”.
Ken’s career spans more than four decades. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge, Guest Professor at the University of Agder in Norway and Honorary Professor at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
Ken has made a made major contributions to a better understanding of the use of calculators and the integration of digital technology in the mathematics curriculum, dialogic teaching practices, teachers’ professional knowledge and expertise and to theory and method in educational research.
He has served the community in the UK in many different ways and as a critical friend and colleague to many. He has been a consistent supporter of mathematics education research in Europe and beyond. He has been Editor of Educational Studies in Mathematics and is an active and valued member of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education.
He was Chair of BSRLM from 2005 until 2008. During this period, he, together with Hilary Povey, established our international journal, Research in Mathematics Education (RME). This has been a very important step in BSRLM’s development as a learned society. Since the journal’s inception, he has been an Advisory Editor of the journal. Over the past 15 years, the journal has gone from strength to strength and Ken’s support, guidance and advice has been crucial to the journal’s success.
The BSRLM Honorary Award is made every 3 years. The awardee is invited to give a plenary at one of BSRLM’s day conferences and becomes a lifetime member of the Society. Previous awardees have been Margaret Brown and John Mason.
